A couple have been left ssss-eething after their newly-purchased pet snake was delivered to them DEAD.

Dan and Lucy Richardson bought what they thought was their perfect python for £325 after searching for months for a new reptile to add to their collection. However, the pair, from Hull, East Yorks., were devastated when they opened up the expensive package and realised the snake had died in transit.

Mrs Richardson, 26, explained that they believe the animal may have suffered in the plummeting temperatures up north.

She said: "We ordered it from a shop down south and, because of the kind of shop we were dealing with, we didn't question how she was getting to us.

"Normally, they use a specialist reptile courier with heated vans so we thought it would be a service like that."

Unfortunately, the couple, who have six other snakes, were much mistaken and were delivered their precious package a day after the snake was picked up by the courier.

Mrs Richardson said: "The courier literally threw the box at me because he said he was petrified of snakes.

"He said they didn't have any heated vans and I started to worry straight away.

"When we opened the box, she had some heat packages but nothing would have saved her - she was stone cold and rigor mortis had already started to set in."

The snake was a rare motley type of python and would have joined the couple's two reticulated pythons and a boa constrictor. Mrs Richardson said: "She was in perfect health when she was picked up from the shop but she would have died overnight because she couldn't have survived in those temperatures.

"We are fuming that a reptile service could deliver her like that without heating. It was a ridiculous situation."

Fortunately, the snake enthusiasts have been able to claim a full refund but say it will take a while to get over the shock of the discovery. Mrs Richardson said: "She is something we had saved a bit of money for and it was almost a joint Christmas gift for the pair of us.
"We had been keeping our eyes out for a snake in that good a condition for about 12 months before we found her - she was an unbelievable standard."
