Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel held a press conference on Friday after speaking at the Saint Petersburg International Economic Forum. Both Putin and Merkel are supposed to give remarks for the opening of an exhibition called "Bronze Age: Europe Without Borders", which is set to open Saturday at the Hermitage museum. Putin put all the rumours to rest after a government spokesman in Berlin announced that a planned event during Merkel's visit had been cancelled, saying: "We have not cancelled anything, we just wanted to see whether we would have enough time to visit the exhibition in the Hermitage. When we checked the schedule, we realized we would have plenty of time for the press conference, for a meeting with business leaders, and we will also make it to the Hermitage. So this problem simply doesn't exist." While Germany has demanded the return of these artifacts, Russia has refused, citing the large human cost of the war and the damage inflicted on Russian art treasures in the German invasion. Putin addressed the scandal, saying: "The art issue is quite sensitive for both Russian and German civil society. If we are to move forward, we need to look for ways to resolve it and not inflate it out of proportion. It's hardly worth starting an argument now because people will come forward from the Russian side and count up the value Russian art treasures damaged during the Second World War." At the end of the press conference Putin presented Merkel with a topography painting symbolizing the signing of Russian-German trade treaty of 1894.
